Open Question: Toshiba Laptop Problems, Freezing and Startup Trouble..?

Well, I'm running Windows Vista on a Toshiba Laptop, and this problem started a while back.
First, the computer would freeze up sometimes, and I would have to restart it. Then over time it progressed to where It would freeze more often and then shut itself off. I thought maybe I had a virus, becuase my virus software was sketchy at the time, so I installed AVG and did some scans, no viruses.
I started thinking that maybe it wasn't a virus, and maybe had to do with the hardware, and maybe overheating, but it's now started freezing and shutting itsself down more often when the laptop doesnt even feel that hot.
Now I'm facing problems at startup, it will either freeze during the startup, and it will take about 5 or so tries to get it fully started up. Sometimes the screen wont come on and only the fan.
So yeah, that's my dilemma, so if anyone can diagnose this, it would be great. Thanks :/
